U.S. Cheese Production In February Increases 6.3% From Year Earlier
U.S. cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, in February totaled 1.109 billion pounds, up 6.3% from February 2021’s 1.044 billion pounds, according to data released last week by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). (All figures are rounded. Please see CMN’s Dairy Production chart.) February’s total production was down 5.3% from January’s 1.172 billion pounds, but up 4.8% on an average daily basis.
Italian-type cheese production in February totaled 469.9 million pounds, up 6.0% from February 2021. Production of Mozzarella, the largest component of Italian-type cheese production, totaled 360.8 million pounds in February, up 4.4% from a year earlier.
American-type cheese production in February totaled 444.4 million pounds, up 4.3% from February 2021. Production of Cheddar, the largest component of American-type cheese, totaled 312.3 million pounds in February, up 3.9% from February 2021.
Wisconsin was the leading cheese-producing state with 278.3 million pounds produced in February, up 5.3% from February 2021. California produced the second most cheese in February at 201.6 million pounds, up 4.0% from a year earlier.
U.S. production of butter totaled 183.6 million pounds in February, down 1.4% from February 2021. February U.S. butter production was down 5.4% from January’s 194.0 million pounds but up 4.8% on an average daily basis. California led the nation in butter production with 59.2 million pounds in February, up 3.9% from February 2021.
