Attracting Gen-Z Talent
FPSA, the industry association for food processing and packaging machinery manufacturers, recently saw a great piece about attracting Gen-Z talent to manufacturing jobs. This topic is of particular interest due to FPSA launching its first Career Fair on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology last year. This event was a great learning experience for all involved and set up many young people for their first job coming out of college.
It is clear that with the Great Retirement and the daily exit of baby boomers from the workforce, it has never been more important to attract and retain the next generation. FPSA recognizes that taking a higher-paying job, but one that is boring, does not fit into the equation for Gen-Z’ers. Pay or “how much” is not necessarily the driving factor for these young people. More important is the “what”, the “how” and the “why” of the job. Nothing too strange or out of the ordinary there. They want to do something that is important to them, knowing that could full well change in the future. That’s ok.
FPSA believes that the food industry has a duty to promote itself as a stable, positive career and guide the next generation as to the many paths they can take within it. Following the Career Fair, FPSA has already been in touch with Purdue, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Missouri S&T, Oregon State, and IIT to collaborate on their hiring events this coming spring. FPSA encourages industry professionals to get out to these schools to meet with students and see what they have to offer. If you wait for them to find you, you’ll be waiting for a very long time.
