U.S. Cheese Production Trends: July’s Comprehensive Overview
The Production of U.S. cheese in July, excluding cottage cheese, totaled 1.162 billion pounds, down 0.7% from both the 1.170 billion pounds of cheese produced in July 2022 and 1.170 billion pounds produced in June, according to data released this week by USDA’s Natural Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). (All figures are rounded. Please see CMN’s Dairy Production chart.) July cheese production was down 3.9% from June on an average daily basis.
Breakdown By Cheese Type And Leading States
Italian-type cheese production in July totaled 481.6 million pounds, down 1.5% from July 2022. Production of Mozzarella, the largest component of Italian-type cheese production, totaled 382.2 million pounds in July, down 2.6% from a year earlier.
American-type cheese production in July totaled 475.2 million pounds, up 0.2% from July 2022. Production of Cheddar, the largest component of American-type cheese, totaled 331.5 million pounds, down 2.6% from July 2022.
Wisconsin was the leading cheese-producing state with 291.7 million pounds produced in July, up 2.4% from July 2022. California followed with 202.3 million pounds produced in July, down 4.0% from a year earlier.
Butter Production Insights: U.S. State-Wise Breakdown
U.S. production of butter totaled 157.0 million pounds in July, up 3.5% from July 2022. July butter production was down 3.2% from June’s 162.1 million pounds and down 6.3% on an average daily basis. California was the leading butter-producing state with 51.0 million pounds produced in July, down 6.0% from July 2022.
