Cheese Production Slightly Up From Year Earlier
U.S. cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, in February totaled 1.110 billion pounds, up 0.4% from February 2022’s 1.105 billion pounds. February U.S. cheese production was down 7.9% from January’s 1.205 billion pounds but up 1.9% on an average daily basis, according to data released last week by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Italian-type cheese production in February totaled 460.0 million pounds, down 1.4% from February 2022. Production of Mozzarella, the largest component of Italian-type production, totaled 365.0 million pounds in February, up 1.6% from a year earlier.
American-type cheese production in February totaled 453.1 million pounds, up 2.4% from February 2022. Production of Cheddar, the largest component of American-type cheese, totaled 325.4 million pounds in February, up 5.6% from February 2022.
Wisconsin was the leading cheese-producing state with 273.6 million pounds produced in February, up 1.1% from February 2022. California produced the second most cheese in February at 200.1 million pounds, down 1.3% from a year earlier.
U.S. production of butter totaled 186.4 million pounds in February, up 1.6% from February 2022. February butter production was down 7.4% from January’s 201.3 million pounds but up 2.5% on an average daily basis.
